Not every pattern is created equal—and not every pattern is the right fit for your tools, skills, or glass stash. Whether you’re following a design from another artist or creating your own, here are a few things I look for before I start cutting.
Size
Does the scale match the time and workspace you have? A large piece might be beautiful, but do you have the space to build and store it while working?
Skill Level
Match the complexity of the pattern with your current skill set. If you’re newer to glasswork, avoid lots of inner curves or tiny details that are more likely to break during cutting.
Tools & Supplies
Do you have everything the pattern demands? Some designs require special tools like a ring saw or specific framing materials. And do you have the right glass colors on hand—or are you about to fall into a buying spiral?
Line Flow
Does the design feel smooth and balanced, or sharp and angular? Neither is right or wrong, but it’s worth asking yourself what kind of energy you’re drawn to right now.
Connection
Do you connect with the design emotionally or creatively? Whether it’s your own work or one you’ve purchased, feeling invested in the image can lead to better decisions—especially around color and detail.
Choosing the right pattern can be the difference between a frustrating build and a deeply satisfying project. Start with the right fit, and the rest of the process flows that much smoother.
